Shevchenko Scientific Society of Canada invites you to a lecture ( in Ukrainian) by Dr. TARAS KOZNARSKY
Associate Professor, Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, University of Toronto
Research interests include Ukrainian and Russian literature, national and cultural identity.
“MYKOLA MARKEVYCH: colonial melody, national pathos.”
Markevych, a descendant of the prominent Cossack family, is known as a
historian, ethnographer, poet and composer. A friend of Shevchenko, to whom the Kobzar dedicated “Banduryste, orle syzyi..” Although Markevych appreciated his Ukrainian heritage and spoke fluently in the vernacular, he published in Russian only. Why? The lecture will touch upon his poetry collection “Ukrainian Melodies” (Moscow, 1831) and several other publications.
